The most common guiding and informational documents often referenced by the community planning board members, city staff and developers who are applying for permits in San Diego are as follows:
Project pipeline: an outline of the projects and summary of cycle issues on projects that have not been heard yet.
Community plan adopted in 1988, is the current planning guide with tools that outline how to fit harmonious projects within the planning area.
City Council Policy 600-24 is the city council's policy document that guides planning group actions.
The Brown Act guides meeting protocol and practices.

In addition Uptown's Community Plan, some Planned District Ordinances provide for special considerations. In Uptown these are the Mid-city and West Lewis Planned District Ordinances

It defines Permitted Development Controls, Processing of Planned District Permits, Uses Permitted in the certain areas or Planned Districts, Initiation of Planned District Amendments, Additional Notice, Decision Process, and Applicable Regulations.
